“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller
Literacy and Beyond is committed to developing partnerships that will implement innovative, evidence-based approaches to help children be more prepared to succeed in school. We do this by creating and supporting educational programming for children and their families and addressing non-academic barriers that would hinder their success.
These are the community organizations that we are currently partnering with to provide services for families and children.
B.W.C.A.A. directs the Early Head Start playgroups for 0-3 year old children and their parents that are held in our shared Early Childhood Education classroom. Parents join the Head Start workers for a time of socialization and learning opportunities to improve their readiness for future education. Classes that address parenting and relationship strategies are also offered throughout the year, and we encourage our students to participate and benefit from the expertise of B.W.C.A.A.’s staff.
Mid City Nutrition provides lunch for the participants in our Y.O.U. & Beyond G.E.D. prep program. A wonderful meal is prepared for our students so that hunger doesn’t prevent them from fully engaging in their studies. This meal also provides a social opportunity for students to enjoy spending a little downtime with each other and our staff between classes.
The Council on Aging serves local senior citizens by providing meals every day at 11:30 am at the 2GEN Learning Center. The Council also supports Literacy and Beyond with one of their foster grandparents who serves as a volunteer in our Early Childhood Education program. We love our “grandma” and are encouraged by the great services we are able to provide to the community through our partnership with the CoA!
