Our Mission…

To improve the reading skills and educational outcomes of at-risk children and their families in addition to addressing the non-academic barriers that hinder their success.

Our History…

Literacy and Beyond was founded as HIS Life Foundation in 2009 with a mission of helping people reach their full potential educationally and professionally through various programs.  In the spring of 2013 we re-branded the organization and changed our name to Literacy and Beyond to better reflect our ongoing efforts of improving children’s literacy skills in the communities we serve.

Our Story…

In 2009 we began our work by providing cash incentives to students participating in our “Reading Pays!” program at a local middle school. The cash incentives were paid to students as they reached goals in the program designed to improve their fluency and comprehension skills. Within two years we were supporting students at two local middle schools and expanded our efforts to begin working with struggling at-risk readers at several local elementary schools. The elementary “Reading Pays!” programs included mobile literacy labs consisting of laptops, Chromebooks and iPads, in addition to research-proven online curriculums designed to improve foundational reading skills. Additionally, the  elementary Reading Pays! program provided money to the  students who demonstrated the most reading growth at each school to purchase high interest books of their choosing to build their home libraries. From the inception of the Reading Pays! program through the end of the 2015-2016 school year, we have given away over 20,000 books to build home libraries while helping improve the reading skills of over 4000 elementary aged children in our community.  At the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, the Reading Pays! program changed to become the “Books4Kids: Building Home Libraries” program which you can learn more about by clicking on the Our Programs tab on our home page.

In 2014, understanding the important role parents play in their children’s success, our board of directors expanded our mission by embracing a “two generation” strategy which provides opportunities for and meets the needs of vulnerable children and their parents together.  To address the needs of both generations we moved to our current 2GEN Learning Center at 723 Court Street in Port Huron where we have 12000 square feet of office and classroom space.  We are passionate about partnering with other mission-focused organizations who are dedicated to excellence and transformational outcomes utilizing a two generation approach. We believe that the collective impact accomplished through collaboration greatly improves upon the impact we could have on our own.  Please click on the 2GEN Learning Center tab on our home page to learn more about the exciting partnerships we have developed to transform the lives of families in our community.

Learn. Teach. Give.

Change the world.

One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, or how much money I had in the bank, but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in a child’s life.
